The scene depicts Peter the Great in Zaandam, showing the Russian tsar visiting the Dutch shipyards in 1697 during his Grand Embassy to learn Western shipbuilding techniques. This subject, taken from European prints, was a popular theme on Chinese export porcelain in the 18th century, reflecting both European historical interest and the transfer of imagery to Qing workshops for the export market.
