Lars Petter Sjöström (1820–1896) was a Swedish marine painter best known for his portraits of merchant and sailing vessels. This work depicts the Dutch bark Auburn of Farmsum under Captain Albert H. Stukje. Built in Sunderland in 1867, the vessel sailed for the Farmsum shipowner Geert Geerts Albers. Captain Stukje is recorded as master of the Auburn in 1883–1886 in the crew registers preserved in the Gemeentearchief of Delfzijl (link).
