The casket was presented in 1959 to Emile L.C. Schiff (1918–2000), a Dutch diplomat and senior civil servant. Schiff played an important role in post-war Dutch diplomacy and served as the first Dutch ambassador to Indonesia following the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He later became Secretary-General of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and concluded his diplomatic career as ambassador to Australia.
