The scene, depicting a couple in a garden, was taken from an engraving entitled Le Printemps by Nicolas de Larmessin III (1684-1755), a French print-maker. This was part of a series of engravings, Les Quatre Saisons, devoted to the four seasons and produced around 1740-45, after a painting by Nicholas Lancret (1690-1743) of 1738.
