The Carter coat of arms, of St. Columb in Cornwall, traces its origins to a Staffordshire family. This service was possibly commissioned for the Right Honourable Thomas Carter, Master of the Rolls, Secretary of State, and Privy Councillor. In 1719, he married Mary Claxton, daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Claxton of Dublin.
