This Ko-Sometsuke blue and white plate, produced for the Japanese market, combines the symbolic language of traditional Chinese auspicious imagery with a decorative style attuned to Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, and is executed with a deliberate use of reserved white space in underglaze blue. The centre of the dish is painted with blooming plum blossoms. Above the blossoms, a pair of magpies in flight conveys the rebus 'Xi Shang Mei Shao', expressing happiness reaching the eyebrows, while below, a pair of pheasants symbolises 'Jin Shang Tian Hua', adding splendour to prosperity. Together, these auspicious motifs express layered wishes for joy and good fortune.
