Léon De Smet (1881–1966) was an important Belgian Post-Impressionist painter associated with the Latem School. Best known for his landscapes and refined treatment of light and colour, he travelled regularly and painted scenes observed in Belgium and abroad. The present work depicts the riverside town and church of Vernon in Normandy, executed in De Smet’s recognisable painterly manner and atmospheric palette.
